Club Objectives
- To promote knowledge of flowers and the art of flower arrangement
- To promote knowledge of sustainable, environmentally and pollinator friendly garden practices
- To promote knowledge of gardening and landscape design
- To participate in civic activities as a club
- To enhance the beauty and features of Oxford, MD.
- To actively support all forms of environmental conservation.
In keeping with its objectives, Oxford Garden Club maintain the gardens at the Oxford Community Center, The Oxford Library and The Oxford Museum. The Museum garden, reminiscent of an old cottage garden, was designed and installed by the garden club and has won several awards. The club designed and installed an entirely new garden near the Post Office in Oxford in 2023, under a grant from National Garden Clubs.
The club is active in its community, providing flower arrangements for shut-ins at holidays several times a year, decorating and running a float in the Oxford Day parade and providing floral arrangements for the Fine Arts show at Oxford Community Center each spring. New in 2024 is a community garden designed, planted, and maintained by the club to provide fresh vegetables to a local food pantry.
Environmental conservation in a garden setting is important. The club The club regularly hosts free, open-to-the public lectures on these topics. This dedication to purpose has lead to a strong focus on pollinators, native plants, and a “pesticide-free” environment in each garden it tends as well as member’s gardens.
With several certified Flower Show Judges as members, OGC never lacks for participation in its biennial flower shows; members also participate in others in Maryland. Skilled floral artists delight the club several times a year with demonstrations and lessons in design and mechanics of their art. Members, taught by these experts, regularly win ribbons at shows.
Where there are gardeners, there are fun-loving people, and Oxford Garden Club makes sure that parties happen regularly with a much loved Christmas party and a joyful summer celebration, both held at member’s homes and gardens.
The club participates in both Wreaths Across America in December and the placement of flags for Veteran’s Day, both at Hurlock Veterans Cemetery. In addition, the club installed a Blue Star Memorial Marker in the Town Park to honor all members of the armed service. A brief ceremony is held on Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day at the Marker.
